Jewellery Care Guide for Guyana: Cleaning, Wearing and Storage
Jewellery care should match the metal, finish, gemstone, treatment and construction of the piece. A method that is suitable for one item can damage another, so begin with the product information and use the least aggressive method that is appropriate.
Safe starting steps
- Remove the item before applying perfume, hair products, household cleaners or other chemicals.
- Wipe the item gently with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth after wear.
- Keep pieces dry before storage and avoid placing damp jewellery in a closed container.
- Store pieces separately where practical so that chains do not tangle and hard surfaces do not scratch softer finishes.
Cleaning when the material is known
The Gemological Institute of America advises that warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are suitable for many coloured gems, but it also identifies important exceptions. Pearls, coral, turquoise, coated gems, filled gems and some heat-sensitive materials require special care. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning should not be treated as universal methods.
Use only a cleaner that is intended for the confirmed material. Avoid toothpaste, abrasive powders, chlorine and bleaching agents. If the listing does not identify the material or treatment, use a soft cloth and request product-specific care guidance before applying a liquid cleaner.
Plated and coated items
A surface finish can wear through friction, chemicals or aggressive polishing. Do not use metal polish unless the product instructions state that it is suitable for that exact finish. A soft cloth and careful storage are safer starting controls for an item with an unknown coating.
Check settings and fastenings
Stop wearing an item if a stone moves, a prong catches fabric or a clasp no longer closes securely. Cleaning cannot correct a loose setting. The item should be assessed before normal wear resumes.
